Centennial Lodge Blessing: Knoll News Fall 2013

A Blessing For Centennial Lodge

By The Rev. Gail Avery, Trustee
             Inspired by John O’Donohue’s “Beginnings”

May this CENTENNIAL Lodge be a home to all who enter.
And every time you come here,
may all the weight of the world fall from your shoulders.
May every heart be tranquil here,
blessed by a peace the world might not be able to give.

May this Lodge be a happy place,
where the dreams and aspirations of campers
always find the pathway to this door.
May nothing destructive ever cross its threshold.

May this be a safe place,
full of understanding and acceptance,
where campers can be as they are,
without the need of any mask
of pretense or image.

May it be a place of discovery,
where the possibilities that sleep
in the playfulness of our souls can emerge
as we deepen and refine the Camp’s vision.
And for all that is yet to come to birth.

May it be a place of courage,
where persistence and growth are loved,
where dignity and kindness prevail;
a camp where patience of spirit is prized,
and our values and spirit of Willingness, Loyalty,
Comradeship and Sportsmanship are never lost.

May there be great delight around this hearth.
May it be a place of welcome, especially
for the broken and diminished and the homesick.

May we ALL have the eyes to see
that no visitor, Camper or Alum arrives without a gift..
And no one leaves without a blessing…

Centennial Success: Knoll News Fall 2013

The WLC Centennial Celebration went off without a hitch on Labor Day Weekend 2013.  Over 350 guests and staff (including 58 children under 14) gathered on the Knoll for the three-day reunion that showcased the Centennial Lodge, the refurbished Barn, and a full program of activities. The weather alternated between delightful and downpours, but the rain did not dampen the spirits.

Patrick Rae and his kitchen crew served up delicious meals, and Louis Doig ran an excellent program, ably assisted by Tom Oxtoby and a crew of phenomenal current and former staff members.  The alumni rifle match with FDL was close, but it ended with a victory for WLC.  Charlie Cleary was awarded the Owen M. Carle Award for his service to Camp, and Neil Hulbert announced the impressive numbers for the Centennial Capital Campaign.  From the busy waterfront to the exciting live auction, a good time was had by all.

Thank you to everyone for attending and for pitching in to make the event a success. If you have photos from the weekend, please send them to the Camp office. Special thanks to Director Nat Crane and Centennial Celebration Committee members Pam Helleren, Deb Clauson, Geoff McIntosh, Beezie Handy, Pat Rae, Martha Erickson, Louis Doig, Anne Bullitt, and Lucy Hancock. If you enjoyed the Centennial, then be sure to book your calendar for Alumni Weekend on August 21-24, 2014!

Directors Message: Knoll News Fall 2013

What a year it has been at William Lawrence Camp.  A very successful summer camp season capped off by a wonderful celebration of our 100 years!

One of the truly amazing aspects of camp is the people: people that are so committed to the success and well-being of this organization. This manifested itself in so many ways over the past year. Our summer staff was an awesome group, almost all of whom had been with us in the past. The staff who worked the 100th reunion, coming from all around the world, were a major factor in the success of the event. The Board of Trustees, along with volunteers from the ranks of former campers and parents, worked tirelessly over the past couple of years to raise funds for our capital campaign, plan the 100th celebration, publish the Centennial History Book, expand our outreach to alumni and friends and much more. And so many folks came back to camp, to relive childhood memories, connect with old friends and celebrate the very existence of William Lawrence Camp.

Thank you to everyone for their role, large or small, in the success of William Lawrence Camp. I believe our goal of strengthening the foundation of camp for its next 100 years has been met.
